The Question We Stopped Asking Each Other- And Why I’m Asking You

I’ve noticed a disturbingly common trend among my female friends. The majority have spent decades caring for the people around them, whether children, spouses, parents or coworkers, and put their personal aspirations on hold.

So even though we usually save this question for children, and even though you likely already have a role, I’m gonna go ahead and ask- what do you want to be when you grow up?

Maybe this answer’s been sitting inside you for years, waiting for its moment. Or maybe you’ve been too busy or tired to think about it. If that’s the case, I invite you to consider it now.

Close your eyes. Okay, closing your eyes doesn’t really work while you’re reading. Best to keep them open. Imagine yourself in your favorite place. Picture the scenery, the temperature, the sounds. What does it smell like?

You get to stay in this paradise for a week. And the thing that will make it the best week of your life is you get to___________________________________. (Nudge. This is where you fill in the blank.)

What activity would you love to explore without interruption? And how would it feel?

For me, I’m in a cabin in the woods. It’s fall and the leaves are turning. I get to spend the entire week writing. And I feel like the whole world has opened up to me.

If you’re not sure what you’d like to do, let this question marinate in your brain, picking up details and weight as you go about your day. The clearer you can picture your dream, the easier it will be to get there.

If your dream feels unobtainable at the moment, that’s okay. Tune in next week to turn your dream questioning into dream conquering.

Keep turning pages,
