Why it took me 30 years to reach my goal- and how you can do it faster

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was a kid. I chose pen names and designed covers. And yet I was 40 years old when I got a book deal (Check out this video for my reaction, and prepare for arm flailing).  Dreaming big and believing in yourself are essential, but  if you don’t have a plan- it may take 30 years to reach your goal.

Later, when we know each other better, I’ll share what pushed me from “always wanted to write” to “let's do this thing.” But for now I’ll say you don’t need a big catalyst to pursue your dream. Simply decide that what you love deserves your time and attention.

Maybe you’re the kind of person that goes big right away. The kind who decides to pursue their goal of singing country music, starts drinking honey and kale smoothies, hits the karaoke bar twice a week, and reaches out to Beyonce for a collab. If that’s you, I will get out of your way and watch you do your thing.

But that strategy doesn’t work for everyone. For some people giving 100% in the first month ends in frustration, burn-out, and self-loathing (followed by hiding in a closet eating cheese.) Create a plan and a pace that works for you.

I started small and joined a writing program. Then I began writing every morning. Later I added writing sessions in the evenings. Then one day I wrote “The End” and danced around my bedroom like a lunatic. Creating a plan gets you to the finish line.

Whether you’re a jump-in-big kind of person, or a start-small-and-let-it-grow person, choose one thing you can start doing that will get you closer to your goal. Then hit reply and tell me what it is.

Feeling scared to take the first step? Tune in next week for my tips.
