Your biggest fear and how to push through it
Since we’ve gotten to know each other a bit, I’m going to share my top three fears with you:
Spiders
Needles
Putting my heart and soul into something then getting rejected and feeling like an idiot
Are these fears you share? Want to know how to overcome them? For spiders I recommend a bug guy who can spray your house quarterly. For getting shots I close my eyes and recite the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. For the last one, read on.
But first, quick news: my debut novel Better Than Gelato just popped up on Goodreads! You can add it to your Want To Read shelf.
Now back to conquering fears. When I landed a literary agent I felt so cool and fancy. I shared my news on social media and one friend commented “Can’t wait to read your book when it comes out!” I kid you not, an icy bolt of terror shot through my body.
Friend, how had it not occurred to me that people might actually read my book??
A wave of imposter syndrome hit so hard it left me breathless. “Who am I to write a book? That people are going to read??”
Thankfully I had some Marianne Williamson in my head and I let her speak to my soul.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be?”
Playing small does not serve the world. And sharing our light encourages others to do the same. I have seen this in the replies I receive to these letters.
If fear has kept you from pursuing something you love- acknowledge its existence, then slap it on the butt and send it on its way. You don’t have time to hang out with that guy. You’ve got work to do.
And you don’t have to do it alone. Tune in next week to learn about finding your people.
Keep turning pages,
